Dedicated to the memory of Sister Frances Wheeler

She read Classics at the University of Reading before entering the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and taking the religious name of "Mother Mary Stephen". She became the prefect at St Leonards (by this time a junior/middle school only) in 1956/7 and then became prefect at the SHCJ Combe Bank school, Sundridge near Sevenoaks. Following a period as the Reverend Mother for the community at Birmingham she went to Rome and led the international ARC programme for religious sisters. In her latter years she worked in London for the Westminster Diocese liaising and supporting religious sisters from all orders for the Archbishop. She retired to Oxford in 2003 and died of cancer on 19 February 2004. She was an enlightening teacher, inspirational role model, and faithful friend to hundreds of her former pupils, fellow religious, and those with whom she worked. She was also beloved by her family. The Cafod Candlelight Fund has been set up to honour her memory, life, and work and to benefit children in Africa. The intention is to keep the Fund going until 17 November 2024, the centenary of Francesƒ??s birth.
